Indian Social Customs

Home » Social Customs
Even in the severe social complexity due to the diversity, people of India reflect the rich glories of the past, the culture, traditions and values relative to geographical variations and retain numerous distinctive manners and food habits that remain truly Indian, despite the influences of invaders, traders and immigrants who brought with them their own habits, faiths, practices and observances to this land.
The average Indian is naturally a very inquisitive person. Women prefer a simple "Namaste" from a distance as a greeting. In urban cities, handshakes between both sexes are quite usual. However, any other demonstration of public affection is usually frowned upon.
Indian families demonstrate deep-rooted family values. The surname of an Indian is derived from the name of his caste or place of origin or his family occupation. Men are still considered the head of a family who initiate decisions though they no longer are the single breadwinners. A wife normally serves food to her husband before she eats; Parents are given great respect and regard. In education, parents financially support their children throughout.
Indians believe in public social sharing of happiness and sorrow. Festivals or Celebrations are never limited to families or homes. The whole community or neighborhood get involved in making the occasion lively. Major festivals like Diwali, Holi, Id, Christmas, Mahaveer Jayanthi etc. are all celebrated by sharing sweets and pleasantries among family, neighbours and friends. Indian weddings too are occasions of maximum social participation of the family and friends.
