Indian Flora

Home » Flora
Biodiversity is the hallmark of Indian Subcontinent. The Indian subcontinent has more than one climatic zone in it. The ice clad Himalayas in the temperate zone on one end and the tropical south on the other end offers contrasting environments. This encompasses grasslands, swamplands, plains, deserts, highlands and high mountains Based on the gradual transition many varieties of flora could be seen in India.
The Indian Flora has been thus divided for convenience into three.
  • Himalayan Sub region
  • Tropical forests
  • Indian peninsular region

Classification of Indian Flora

Himalayan Flora

The coniferous forests of the Himalayan region contrast the tropical forests of the south. The Chir Pine is abundant in the area. Decidous trees are found in the rainy foot hills. Shrubs ,fern and grass are also fond here. Brahma putra Vlalley has patches of tea plantations.

South Indian Rain Forests

Kerala on the extreme south has rich rain forests. Thick sandal, teak, and sissoo forests are found here. The wet Karnataka plateau is home to elephants. The dry Telengana plateau in Andhra Pradesh is rich in thorny shrubs and Indian date palm.

The Desert Region

The scorching sun and the short trees present a peculiar look to the region. Cacti, Reunhha, Khejra, Kanju, and Calotropis gigantean are found in abundance.
