Indian subcontinent is home to over 500 mammal species. Indian gazelles, swamp deer, spotted deer, barking deer, sambars are usually seen in forests. Also bullfaloes, Gaurs, hyenas, wild bores, jackals, and Indian foxes and dogs are also seen.
About 2000 species of birds have been noted in India. Also there are migratory birds that reach seasonally. Over 200 species of reptiles have been recorded. This includes pythons, cobras, large fresh water tortoises and monitor lizards. There are over 30,000 species of insects; a variety of butterflies that differ regionally is delighting.
Certain species are common to all the regions like Himalayan Sub region, Tropical forests and Indian peninsular region and there is considerable intermingling also found. Leopard and Indian Rhinioceros are exclusive to India.
Wild life sanctuaries have been set up by the Government in an effort to preserve the dwindling habitats and rare species. Useful insects include silkworms and the lac.
